Fix: Word Cannot Complete the Save due to File Permission

The error “Word cannot complete the save due to permission” disables saving on Windows. It is caused by different reasons such as antivirus software and having no access to change the file.

Saving the file in a different name

Go to the File tab of the file with the error and select Save As.

Change the file Name and it Location.

Click the Save option to completely save the Word file.

Start Word in Safe Mode

On your keyboard, press Windows key + R to open run dialog box.

Type winWord /safe and click OK to open Microsoft Word in Safe Mode.

Go to the File tab and select Open, then look for the file that contains the error.

Modify the Word file as needed and save it in a new location.

If you still can’t save the Word file, follow these steps:

Go back to the File tab and click on Options.

Select Add-ins.

On the Manage section below, choose COM Add-ins from the drop-down menu and press Go.

Select one add-ins listed to disable it.

Click OK and restart the Word app.

Note: Repeat this process until you have not disabled all the available add-ins individually.

Update Windows

Open Windows Update Settings.

Select Windows Update and download any updates available for your Windows.

You may also click on Check for Updates if the download button is not available.

After installation of the update, to save the Word file again to check if you have resolved the issue.

Disable Antivirus Softwares

Disabling Windows antivirus software may help fix Microsoft Word file permission errors. If you try to save a Word file on Windows and your antivirus program detects a virus, it may produce an error.

Saving a Word document after temporarily deactivating antivirus software is simple. Then re-enable your antivirus program. If you still get the Word cannot save due to permission issue after deactivating the antivirus program, then go on to the next trustworthy option.
