How to Enable file compression on Windows 11

On Windows 11, you may utilize the lightweight file compression function of the New Technology File System (NTFS) to reduce the size of files to save space without having to manually compress and decompress them.

This guide will show you how to compress files without using third-party software in this Windows 11 instruction.

New Folder

Open File Explorer.

Open the folder to store the files with compression.

Click the New button and select the Folder option.

Right-click on the new folder and select Properties.

Under the General tab, click on Advanced.

Check the button beside Compress contents to save disk space.

Click OK and Apply.

This PC

Open File Explorer.

Click on This PC on the left pane.

Under Devices and drives, right-click on the storage you want to compress and choose Properties.

Under the General tab, check the Compress the drive to save disk space option.

Click Apply and OK.

On an empty disk or a drive with content, you may activate NTFS compression. If the drive already contains files on it, however, NTFS compression will have to spend more time compressing them.

If you wish to reverse the modifications, follow the same steps as before, but uncheck the Compress this drive to conserve disk space option on step 4.
