How to Switch Between the GUI and Server Core in Windows Server 2012

Earlier Windows Server Core was an enormous one when it was first presented some years ago. Maximum organizations don’t need a full-fledged graphical interface for their servers and this was the abundant option. Certainly, the main task is organizing server core. This has become informal over time and with Windows Server 2012 we have got a new option that makes it fantastic. We can build and organize a server with a GUI and then take that away when required, spinning the box into a Server Core Installation.

This is conceivable as the server GUI in Windows Server 2012 is now an elective feature that means it can be mounted and detached easily as required.

Switching from GUI Mode to Server Core Mode

To make the alteration, open server manager and click on Manage-Remove Roles and Features. This will present the wizard as seen in Image 1.

Select a server from the list.

By clicking NEXT, a list of server roles will appear. I don’t want to make any alteration so click NEXT to proceed to image 3.

Scroll down to “User Interface and Infra Structures” and enlarge as done in Image 4.

I’ll uncheck Server Graphical Shell. Subsequently, there will be no GUI, moreover, there is no purpose to retain the Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure feature.

You will finally be offered with a precipitate, as perceived in Image 5.

You can select if you want to restart when completed or physically handle it far along. Click Remove to start the method as in Image 6.

Switching from Server Core to GUI

The procedure is fundamentally alike, except under Manage select Add Roles and Features. Select Role-based or feature-based installation.

As previously, select the server and skip the roles. On the Features screen, scroll down and check boxes for Graphical Management Tools and Server Graphical Shell.
